No threat to IPL 2020 due to coronavirus, we are keeping a tab: Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to start as scheduled even as the threat of coronavirus keeps increasing with each passing day in the country.

  • The deadly disease has killed over 3,100 people and infected over 90,000 globally
  • A few cases of the virus infection have also been reported in India

IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel on Tuesday ruled out any threat to the upcoming cash-rich T20 league due to the novel coronavirus outbreak as of now but said the authorities are keeping a tab on the situation.

The IPL begins with a clash between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29 while the final will take place on 24 May.

Asked whether there is any threat to IPL due to coronavirus, Patel said, “There is no threat as of now and we are keeping a tab (on the situation).”

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly too ruled out any threat to the IPL or the South Africa series, beginning with the first ODI on March 12 at Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh.

“Nothing in India. Not even discussed it (Coronavirus)'” said Ganguly.

Another senior BCCI official said that the South African team was coming as per the schedule for the three-match ODI series.

The deadly disease, which has killed over 3,100 people and infected over 90,000 globally, has wreaked havoc on the international calendar of various sporting events across the globe and has even put the upcoming Tokyo Olympics under doubt.

A few cases of the virus infection have also been reported in India.

Ranji Trophy semifinal: Arpit Vasavada 139 puts Saurashtra in command vs Gujarat

Arpit Vasavada’s gritty 139 propelled Saurashtra to set a challenging 327-run target for Gujarat on the fourth day of their Ranji Trophy semi-final here on Tuesday.

Chintan Gaja’ fiery spell had brought Gujarat back into contention on the third day, but Vasavada’s seventh first-class hundred, and the third this season, swung the momentum in favour of the hosts.

Courtesy his ton and handy contributions from Chetan Sakariya (45), Chirag Jani (51) and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (21), Saurashtra recovered from a dismal 15 for five to post 274 in their second innings.

They had a 52-run lead and hence the target set was 327.

When stumps were drawn, Gujarat were seven for one with opener Priyank Panchal (0) back in the hut.

Earlier, resuming the day at 66 for five, Sakariya and Vasavada were going strong before their 90-run sixth-wicket stand was broken by a horrible mix-up between the two, which resulted in the former’s dismissal.

The hosts lost their sixth wicket on 105. Jani then joined Vasavada and played the perfect second-fiddle as the hosts took lunch at 155 for six. Saurashtra’s overall lead had by then passed the 200-run mark.

Post lunch, Vasavada and Jani kept frustrating the Gujarat bowlers.

It was Gaja again, who provided the crucial breakthrough for the visitors by dismissing Jani in the 84th over.

The new ball did the trick for Gaja, as he bowled in the good length area and Jani’s outside edge flew to Samit Gohel in the second slip. Vasavasa and Jani added 109 runs for the seventh wicket.

Gaja took his seventh wicket when he removed Prerak Mankad (1) at the stroke of tea, which Saurashtra took at 222-8.

After Jadeja fell, Vasavada upped the ante but perished in the process. In his 139-run innings, he blasted 16 fours and a six.

Considering that it’s a worn-out pitch, it would be a tough ask for Parthiv Patel-led side to chase the target on the final day.

The winner of this game will clash with Bengal, who made to the summit clash after defeating Karnataka.

Brief Scores: Saurashtra 304 and 274 (Arpit Vasavada 139, Chirag Jani 51; Chintan Gaja 7/71) v/s Gujarat 252 and 7/1.

Gujarat need 320 runs to win.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sunil Joshi could emerge as the consensus candidate to replace MSK Prasad
  • Madan Lal, RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik consitute BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee
  • CAC will interview the candidates for replacing MSK Prasad and Gagan Khoda

Former India cricketers Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh have emerged as the two dark horses to replace MSK Prasad and Gagan Khoda in the senior selection committee, which will be finalized on Wednesday.

The Indian squad for the home series against South Africa will be picked by the new selection committee, candidates for which have been shortlisted and will appear before the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) for interviews in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The three-member CAC, headed by former India all-rounder Madan Lal, met on Tuesday with BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah.

The other candidates, who have shortlisted and will appear for the interviews before the CAC, are Venkatesh Prasad, Rajesh Chauhan and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan.

Sunil Joshi likely to replace MSK Prasad

Former India left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi, who played 15 Tests, could emerge as the consensus candidate to replace MSK Prasad as the chairman of the selection committee. The tenures of MSK Prasad and Gagan Khoda are already over while there are still a few months left for Jatin Paranjape, Sarandeep Singh and Devang Gandhi on the panel.

BCCI may likely continue with its policy of one selector from each zone as Sarandeep Singh, Devang Gandhi and Jatin Paranjpe from north, west and east zones are continuing in the existing committee.

Besides Madan Lal, RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik are the other members of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC’s immediate task is to screen the shortlisted candidates for the posts left vacant by chief selector MSK Prasad (South Zone) and Gagan Khoda (Central Zone) as their tenures have ended.

For the second selector, who will replace Khoda, it could be Harvinder Singh, who has played for Punjab and Railways.

ICC Test rankings: Virat Kohli retains 2nd spot despite horror show in New Zealand

India captain Virat Kohli managed to retain his 2nd spot on ICC Test Batting Rankings despite the horror run with the bat in the recently-concluded 2-Test series against New Zealand.

In the latest ICC Test Rankings updated on Tuesday, Steve Smith is sitting pretty on the top of the Test Batting Rankings with 911 points.

Virat Kohli, meanwhile, has dropped 20 points from 906 but is comfortably holding the No. 2 spot. Virat Kohli has a 59-point lead over No. 3-ranked Australia batsman Manus Labuschagne.

In the crucial Test series that is part of the World Test Championship, Virat Kohli’s form (or the lack of it) was India’s major concern. In 2 Tests and 4 innings, Kohli managed just 38 runs at an average of 9.50.

Meanwhile, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has dropped a spot to 9th after an equal horror run with the bat in New Zealand. Rahane managed just 91 runs in 4 innings and was demoralized by some short-pitched stuff from Neil Wagner in the Christchurch Test.

On the other hand, Cheteshwar Pujara rose 2 spots to 7th. He was among the only 2 Indian batsmen to have scored more than 100 runs in the 2-Test series in New Zealand.

Opener Mayank Agarwal though dropped outside top 10 and slipped to the 11th spot despite being India’s top-scorer with 102 runs in New Zealand.

Bumrah, Southee climb Test bowlers’ charts

In the Test Bowling Rankings, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah climbed 4 spots to 7th after regaining form towards the end of the Test series.

Bumrah, who looked ordinary in India’s 10-wicket defeat in Wellington, troubled New Zealand batsmen and finished the series with 6 wickets.

Bumrah, who returned to the Test side after missing the home season last year, rattled the New Zealand batsmen on Day 3 of the 2nd Test. He had removed New Zealand captain Kane Williamson in both the innings of the 2nd Test.

The Test Bowling Rankings is being led by Australia’s Pat Cummins followed by New Zealand’s Neil Wagner. Fast bowler Tim Southee climbed 2 spots into the top 5 after emerging the highest wicket-taker (14) in the 2-Test series against India.

Women’s T20 World Cup: Thailand post 150 before rain abandons match vs Pakistan

Pakistan was set a target of 151 runs, but the side did not get a chance to come out to bat as the rain started pouring down during the mid-innings break.

T20 World Cup Photo

The match between Thailand and Pakistan in the ongoing Women’s World Cup was abandoned due to rain on Tuesday here at the Sydney Showground Stadium.

Pakistan was set a target of 151 runs, but the side did not get a chance to come out to bat as the rain started pouring down during the mid-innings break.

Earlier, Nattakan Chantam played a knock of 56 runs to take Thailand’s score to 150/3 in the allotted twenty overs.

Opting to bat first, Thailand got off to an exceptional start as openers Chantam and Nattaya Boochatham stitched together a partnership of 93 runs. The duo mixed caution and aggression and as a result, kept on registering boundaries at regular intervals.

Pakistan finally got the breakthrough in the 14th over as Boochatham (44) was sent back to the pavilion by Aliya Riaz. However, Chantam kept going strong at one end, and brought up her half-century in the 15th over of the innings.

Chantam (56) was finally sent back to the pavilion by Diana Baig in the 16th over, reducing Thailand to 115/2. In the final overs, Chanida Sutthiruang and Chanida Sutthiruang managed to score boundaries to take the side’s total past the run mark.

New Zealand players react to Virat Kohli’s aggressive on-field behaviour in Test series

India vs New Zealand: Virat Kohli snapped at a journalist who questioned his on-field behaviour during the 2-match Test series in New Zealand after the visitors were whitewashed 0-2.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Virat Kohli snapped at a journalist who questioned his on-field behaviour
  • Kohli allegedly swore at Williamson and the New Zealand crowd at Hagley Oval
  • Tim Southee said Virat Kohli always tries to bring out best out of himself

India captain Virat Kohli’s on-field antics have created a stir after India were handed a 2-0 hammering in the New Zealand Tests on Monday.

Virat Kohli, who was at his usual charged up self during the 2-match Test series, was seen wildly celebrating and giving explosive send-offs to most New Zealand batsmen.

The India captain was also seen interacting with the crowd that constantly kept him engaged. In fact, Virat Kohli was seen coming up with an expletive-laden celebration after the wickets of Kane Williamson and Tom Latham during the 1st innings of the recently-concluded 2nd Test.

On Monday, a New Zealand journalist questioned Virat Kohli’s on-field behaviour, accusing him of swearing at Kane Williamson and a section of the crowd at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

Virat Kohli appeared to lose his cool after the question was posted and asked the journalist in question to ‘come up with better questions’.

“You need to find out exactly what happened and come up with better questions. You can’t come here with half questions or half details of what happened. And also, if you want to create controversy, this is not the right place. I had spoken to the match referee. He had no issues with what happened. Thank You,” Virat Kohli said.

Reacting to the much-talked-about on-field behaviour of Virat Kohli, New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee defended the India captain, saying he tries to bring the best of himself by being charged up on the field.

“He’s a very passionate guy… and very energetic in the field. He tries to bring out the best in himself,” Southee told Radio New Zealand while stressing the Test series was played in the competitive spirit.

Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson also defended Virat Kohli, saying he is a passionate cricketer and that the cricketer fraternity should not look too much into the issue.

“It is Virat, and he is passionate on the field. I don’t think we need to read too much into it,” Williamson told PTI. India were hammered in both the Tests of the 2-match series by New Zealand who looked superior in all 3 departments.

Virat Kohli suffered his 1st-ever Test series whitewash as captain as India dropped points for the 1st time in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.

Kapil Dev suggests Virat Kohli to practice more to combat slowing down of reflexes, eyesight

World Cup-winning former India captain Kapil Dev believes Virat Kohli, who struggled in New Zealand across formats, needs to practise more as “his reflexes and hand-eye coordination are probably slowing down”.

“When you reach a certain age, when you cross 30 then it affects your eyesight. In swings, which used to be his strength, he (Kohli) used to flick them four but now he has been dismissed twice. So I think he needs to adjust his eyesight a bit,” Dev said on ABP news.

In the two Test matches, Kohli managed just 38 runs at an average of 9.50 — his worst in recent times. He amassed a total of 218 runs in the 11 innings (four T20Is, three ODIs and four Tests) that he played against the Black Caps and ended a pathetic tour with just 14 in his last innings.

The end result was that the number one Test side had to face a crushing defeat at the hands of Black Caps, who made amends following their 5-0 whitewash in the T20Is and came back strongly to win the ODIs and the Test matches — 3-0 and 2-0, respectively.

“When big players start getting bowled or LBW to incoming deliveries then you have to tell them to practise more. It shows that your eyes and your reflexes have slowed down a bit and in no time your strengths turn into your weakness.

“From 18-24, your eyesight is at the optimum level but after that, it depends on how you work on it,” he added.

The legendary India skipper said that all players, including the likes of Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Vivian Richards, all faced similar difficulties in their career.

“So Kohli needs to practise more. When your eyesight weakens then you have to tighten up your technique more. The same ball which he used pounce on so quickly, he’s getting late on it now,” Dev said.

According to Kapil, Kohli should focus on getting his game back on track in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League which starts March 29.

“I think IPL will help him. He will start getting the hang of it. He’s a great cricketer, he will definitely realise it himself and make adjustments,” the 61-year-old former all-rounder said.

India will now take on South Africa in the three-match ODI series beginning March 12 in Dharamsala.

We are not shaking hands with each other: Joe Root on coronavirus threat ahead Sri Lanka tour

England were hit by a series of gastroenteritis and flu problems before and during the first Test on their recent tour of South Africa which is why they don’t want to take any chances on the Sri Lanka tour.

(Reuters Photo)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • England players were hit with gastroenteritis and flu during the South Africa tour last year
  • The players and support staff have decided to “keep contact to a minimum” on Sri Lanka tour
  • England will play a series of 2 Tests in Sri Lanka from February 19 as part of the ICC World Test Championship

The England cricket team players are going to avoid shaking hands with each other and instead, use the “well-established fist bump” on their upcoming tour to Sri Lanka, captain Joe Root revealed on Tuesday.

The England squad was hit hard by a series of gastroenteritis and flu problems during their recent tour to South Africa with 10 players and 4 support staff members getting hit by a mystery virus before and during the 1st Test in December last year.

The team though, recovered quickly from the illnesses in the camp and went on to win the four-match series after losing the first game by 107 runs at Centurion.

Once bitten twice shy and with the growing coronavirus outbreak around the world, the players are not going to take any chances on their next tour which is why they have decided to limit their physical contact with each other in Sri Lanka.

“After the illnesses that swept through the squad in South Africa, we are well aware of the importance of keeping contact to a minimum and we’ve been given some really sound and sensible advice from our medical team to help prevent spreading germs and bacteria,” Root said.

“We are not shaking hands with each other, using instead the well-established fist bump, and we are washing hands regularly and wiping down surfaces using the anti-bacterial wipes and gels we’ve been given in our immunity packs.

“There is no suggestion that the tour will be affected, but of course it is an evolving situation so we are in regular contact with the authorities and will proceed as advised, but at this stage we fully expect the tour to continue as planned,” the skipper added.

England will play the first of two practice games against a Sri Lanka Board Presidents XI in Katunayake on Saturday ahead of the 2 Tests in Galle and Colombo starting March 19.

A number of sporting events have already been postponed because of the coronavirus, which originated in China.

More than 3,000 people have lost their lives across the globe due to the deadly disease while the number of confirmed cases has crossed 80,000-mark.

In India, at least three cases of coronavirus were reported on Monday.
