Coronavirus: Karnataka steps up precautionary measures after techie tests positive

After a 24-year-old man, who works in Bengaluru as a software professional, was found positive for coronavirus in Hyderabad, the state health department is on a high alert.

On Tuesday, the health as well as medical education ministers held an emergency meeting to take stock of the prevailing situation.

Dr Sudhakar, medical education minister told India Today that the state is all geared up to tackle any emergency that might arise.

The National Institute of Virology, in the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases, have a 15-bed isolation ward ready.

Likewise, there are 30 beds in government-run hospitals and more than 1,639 beds in private hospitals.

“Though we do not have any case that is positive for coronavirus in Karnataka, we already have 2,500 beds and if the situation demands, we will be ready with much more. Our Honourable Chief Minister [BS Yediyurappa] gave a blanket permission to the health and family and medical education ministers. Spending is not the issue, money is not the issue,” Dr Sudhakar said.

As of today, the government is strictly testing passengers at the airports but wherever they have doubts, they will go ahead and quarantine the suspected passengers.

Dr Sudhakar said that with no medical protocol yet in the world, it is all about learning new things every day.

The state government is now planning on increasing the surveillance that is presently on at airports and port to even the railway stations.

Regarding the techie who was tested positive, the state apparatus has kicked in.

Twenty-four people whom he worked with have been contacted by the health department and are now home quarantined. There were 23 passengers in the bus, who were from Karnataka, and they too have been home quarantined.

The techie stayed with his friend in an apartment on Sarjapur road. His friend was taken the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) for a check-up and then sent back home and is now being monitored.

Dr Sudhakar added that those People who came in close contact with the infected techie are now being isolated and monitored. The health department doctors also visited the apartment complex and briefed the flat owners about coronavirus and what precautions need to be taken.

Pankaj Kumar Pandey, commissioner of health, family welfare and AYUSH services in Karnataka said that some 40,000 people have been screened at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), 20,000 at Mangaluru airport and about 4,500 at the two main ports — Karwar and New Mangaluru –so far.

Pankaj Kumar Pandey advised people with fever, persistent cough, and breathlessness to immediately contact helpline number 104 and ask for assistance. “We will immediately send our team or tell what has to be done. So we depend more on the information from the public, so public has to be aware,” Pankaj Kumar Pandey added.

The RDICD has one patient whom they are waiting to be discharged.

Dr Nagaraj, one the directors at RDICD, told India Today that the Iranian student, who is doing his final year dental course, was admitted three days ago. “He suffered from some of the symptoms and admitted himself out of caution. After arriving in Bengaluru, he came to know that his mother is coronavirus positive. He developed symptoms of fever and cough but he is stable now. We were only waiting for the guidelines from the government of India regarding the patient discharge policy,” Dr Nagaraj said.

Schools in Karnataka have also been directed to grant leave to students and staff suffering from cold or fever.

“If any student, teacher of staffer is suffering from respiratory infections, they should be granted leave. They should be allowed to come back to school only after confirming from the doctor that they are cured. In case of a student or staffer staying at hostels developing any symptoms, they should be kept in a separate room,” the government circular read.

IPL 2020: Sunrisers Hyderabad team profile

One of the most consistent franchises in IPL over the years, Sunrisers Hyderabad opted for a coaching shake-up replacing Tom Moody who led them to a league title in 2016, with another serial winner in Trevor Bayliss.

Trevor Bayliss, who won the World Cup with England this year and has a couple of IPL titles to boot with KKR, will be assisted by former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.

David Warner was reinstated as Sunrisers Hyderabad captain, two years after stepping down because of his international ban for ball-tampering.

Warner replaced Kane Williamson as the skipper of Hyderbad based franchise. Sunrisers became a part of the Indian Premier League in 2013 when they replaced Deccan Chargers, whose franchise contract was terminated.

Since then, Sunrisers have played two finals and won one. In fact, the team has qualified for the play-off stage of the tournament in every season since 2016.

The biggest reason behind the success of SRH is that over the years, their auction strategies have been excellent credit to their impressive think-tank.

Former skipper David Warner and India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been the lynchpin of SRH over the past few seasons.

Warner is the leading run-scorer for the SRH, having won the Orange Cap most no. of times (3), in 2015, 2017 and 2019 whereas Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been their leading wicket-taker.

Sunrisers have a formidable and experienced top three in the form of David Warner, Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson. To back up an already imposing axis of Warner-Bairstow-Williamson, they have got an inform Manish Pandey at No.4.

These batsmen will have to do the bulk of the scoring again upfront since their Indian core is relatively inexperienced. SRH boasts of one of the best bowling attacks in the tournament, often admired for its ability to defend low totals.

This time also their bowling is power-packed with many Indian options on offer. However, Bhuvneshwar’s presence is a must and he is the one that can make a huge difference at the death.

Other pacers like Sidharth Kaul and Khaleel Ahmed can rally around him. Rashid Khan and Shahbaz Nadeem are two strong options in the spin department.

IPL 2020 Auctions

Sunrisers Hyderabad retained most of its squad including youngsters Abhishek Sharma, Khaleel Ahmed, T Natarajan, Sandeep Sharma. In the IPL auction 2020, Sunrisers Hyderabad turned out to be the lowest spending franchise splashing a meager Rs 6.90 crore to buy seven players.

SRH roped in some promising youngsters in the ranks during the auction last year. The David Warner-led side got two strong uncapped Indian youngsters to bolster the batting. They were joined by foreigners Mitchell Marsh and Fabian Allen to bring more depth.

Here’s a look at the complete SRH squad:

David Warner (captain), Kane Williamson, Manish Pandey, Virat Singh, Priyam Garg, Abdul Samad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, Sandeep Sharma, Siddharth Kaul, Billy Stanlake, T Natarajan, Abhishek Sharma, Shahbaz Nadeem, Mitchell Marsh, Fabian Allen, Vijay Shankar, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Sanjay Yadav, Jonny Bairstow, Wriddhiman Saha, Shreevats Goswami, Bavanaka Sandeep, Basil Thampi.

SRH IPL History:

2013: Qualified for playoffs eventually finishing in fourth place

2014: Knocked out in group stage after finishing 6th out of 8 teams

2015: Knocked out in group stage after finishing 6th out of 8 teams

2016: IPL Champions

2017: Qualified for playoffs eventually finishing in third place

2018: IPL Runners Up

2019: Qualified for playoffs eventually finishing in fourth place

Predictions for IPL 2020

Sunrisers Hyderabad are a strong contender for the title and it all depends on the kind of momentum they get early in the tournament. They have all bases covered and are almost certain to make it to the final under the leadership of David Warner.

SRH COACHING STAFF:

Head coach – Trevor Bayliss

Assistant coach – Brad Haddin

Chris Hemsworth on shooting fight sequence with Randeep Hooda: I nicked him but he wasn’t angry

Avengers star Chris Hemsworth says he was “blown away” by the welcome he received in India while shooting for his upcoming action drama Extraction, which is predominantly set in the subcontinent.

Hemsworth, who enjoys a huge fan following in the country thanks to his portrayal of God of Thunder Thor, had shared videos of hundreds of people who had lined up the streets of Ahmedabad and Mumbai to watch him shoot the film.

The fan mania and logistics were partly responsible for the production to be shifted to a quiet suburb near Bangkok, Thailand, but Hemsworth has fond memories of the time he spent in India.

“We had such a great time in India. People were beyond welcoming. I’ve never had that kind of response. I was blown away. I thought I was Beatles or something,” the actor told PTI during an interaction with select international media on the sets of the Netflix film.

“It gives you a false sense of security. I felt more important than I was. When I go back to Australia, no one really cares,” the 36-year-old actor added.

Hemsworth plays Tyler Rake, a black market mercenary in the film, who embarks on a deadly mission when he’s enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.

The film, based on an original script by Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo, is scheduled to release on April 24.

The film marks the directorial debut of Sam Hargrave, who has worked as a stunt coordinator as well as the body double of Captain America star Chris Evans.

Indian actor Randeep Hooda plays a key role in the film, so does newcomer Rudhraksh Jaiswal.

Hemsworth is confident that the film will appeal to an international audience as it is produced by the Russo Brothers and is set in the Indian subcontinent.

“It was something that I haven’t seen a lot in this setting. It has some beautiful set pieces and it gave me a chance to work and interact with wonderful people. We had such a great time in India, the actor recalled.

The Australian star had some of the kindest things to say about his Indian co-stars, praising Hooda for his stillness and Jaiswal for his emotional performance in the film.

“With Randeep, it’s wonderful. Our first introduction was We had three weeks of fighting each other and we both had our fair share of cuts and bruises. And actually a couple of times I nicked him, but it was by accident and I felt very embarrassed, he said describing the intense combat sequences they shot in hot weather.

“He (Randeep) wasn’t angry at me,” Hemsworth said with a laugh, adding, “He has been great to work with. And then we’ve had little moments of quiet dialogue.”

The actor, who shares a lot of screen time with Jaiswal, said the young actor reduced people on the sets to tears with his acting.

“Rudy is amazing. I’m blown away by that kid The way he takes direction is better than a lot of adults… With all honesty, he had us in tears a number of times. We would be chatting and just out of nowhere he pours his heart out and I’m like, ‘I’m not supposed to be upset in this scene’ He will have a big career. He’s very talented and just super eager to learn.”

The working title of the film was Dhaka and that’s where most of the action takes place but the production team shot majority of the scenes in India and then in a street near Bangkok, which was made to resemble a typically chaotic market in Bangladesh.

Cat in Chennai to be deported to China over coronavirus fears

A cat that arrived in Chennai inside a container from China is going to be deported back over coronavirus fears.

A cat suspected to be infected with coronavirus is at the centre of a controversy as People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has demanded the release of the cat; which faces deportation from the Chennai port to China, where cats are killed for meat and fur.

A stowaway cat, which arrived in a container from China more than 20 days ago, has been held at the Chennai port and is now facing deportation to China – where it is unlikely to survive – all because of ignorance over the coronavirus.

In response, PETA India’s manager of veterinary services, Rashmi Gokhale, sent a letter to the Chennai port authority stating that it has been scientifically established that cats cannot contract or transmit COVID-19.

The American Veterinary Medical Association states on its website, “Multiple international health organisations have indicated that pets and other domestic animals are not considered at risk for contracting COVID-19.”

The Chennai quarantine facility recommended sending the animal back to its suspected country of origin.

PETA pointed out that it would be very difficult to establish where the cat entered the vessel. It said that it is highly unlikely that the animal would have survived the 10 to 20-day journey from China to India without food and water.

Ships destined for Chennai from China reportedly dock in Singapore, Colombo, and elsewhere, and containers are opened to offload goods, so the cat could have entered the ship at any of the stopping points. In China, cats are often killed for meat or fur, and it’s likely that the animal would be treated cruelly upon arrival, PETA said.

PETA India has offered to help the relevant authorities by finding the cat a loving, permanent home in India, which can be done as soon as the necessary quarantine health assessments and vaccinations have been completed.
